The Guppyfriend washing bag is the first (and perhaps only) practical way to prevent microfibres from entering rivers and oceans when washing synthetic clothing! Short of getting rid of all your clothing not made from natural materials - something most of us can't or won't be doing any time soon - this is a fantastic option.
The Guppyfriend is the first device designed and marketed specifically to prevent microfiber pollution. Microfibers are tiny and can easily move through sewage treatment plants. Natural fibres like linen, cotton, and wool biodegrade over time. However, synthetic fibres are problematic because they do not biodegrade, and tend to bind with molecules of harmful chemical pollutants found in wastewater, such as pesticides or flame retardants. On top of that, clothing fibres are often coated with chemicals to make them "perform better" giving them attributes like water resistance, sweat wicking power, etc etc.
Studies have shown health problems among plankton and other small organisms that eat microfibers, which then make their way up the food chain. Researchers have even found high numbers of microfibres inside fish and shellfish sold at markets. It's a horrible problem that is only now being examined on a large scale, and there is much work to be done.
The Guppyfriend is a product developed by the nonprofit campaign STOP! Micro Waste. They are a German non-profit founded by a group of surfers and nature lovers to find solutions to the microfibre pollution problem and the Guppyfriend is only one part of their work. The revenues of the Guppyfriend washing bags go to the nonprofit, and they have established a STOP! Plastic Academy where school children teach other school children how to avoid plastics and initiate local solutions to reduce, eliminate or recycle single-use plastics.
For all these reasons I'm so happy to be a stockist for Guppyfriend! On top of keeping microfibres out of the waterways, washing your clothing in the bag will result in fewer fibre losses for your clothing, meaning your wardrobe will last longer.
